Have you ever noticed the whitish crescent-shaped area on
the nail bed? Some people have it and others do not, but those who do need to
know that this part of the nails is very sensitive and plays an important role
in their overall health. If it has, be sure not to damage it.
This crescent is called lunula (Latin for the little moon)
and is actually the visible part of the nail root, making it so sensitive. If
you accidentally damage your entire nail could be permanently deformed, so be
very careful. However, if it only damages the rest of the nail and falls or is
removed surgically the lunula will remain intact and in place. The lunula is
not really white; It only looks like that when you see through the nail.

It is more visible on the thumb but not everyone's moon is
visible. In some cases, eponychium, the thickened layer of skin surrounding the
toenails and feet, may cover partially or totally the lunula.
According to traditional medicine, the lunula contains very
important information about the general health of a person. According to
traditional Chinese medicine, the lack of lunula is related to anemia and
malnutrition, while a pale or bluish lunula indicates a possible diabetes. If
your lunula has reddish spots you may experience cardiovascular problems.
Lack of lunula or a really small lunula usually indicates
indigestion as a result of a slow metabolism and toxin overload in the body.
