The oldest in Rockland County could be the oldest couple in
the world and celebrate their birthdays this weekend in a very special way in
the presence of a few friends, family members and Marie Eveillard, their
daughter with whom they live together.
This couple has a combined age of 202 whopping who means a
lot to themselves, families and the county in general because they have been
part of the county's rich history for a whole generation.
Duranord Veillard became 109 in February, while his beloved
wife, Jeanne, became 105 in May. Duranord and Jeanne have been married for
almost a generation. It has been 83 years since they both walked the island in
November 1932, the same month that Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected president
to say his marriage vows and little did they know they would live so long.
Duranord was born on February 28, 1907 to a fisherman in St.
Louis du Sud and raised in Les Cayes in southern Haiti and studied law and
lived in Port-au-Prince.
This wonderful couple gave birth to five children and later
moved to the United States in 1968 with his family when Duranord lost his job
as a judge. He settled in Spring Valley.
Veillard worked as a laboratory technician at Good Samaritan
Hospital for 10 years and was retired for the second time.
Duranord Veillard was dressed in crisp white guayabera with
brown trousers and brown leather shoes and enjoyed moments with his family as
he broke jokes and held the American flag, then began to sing songs he learned
in Cuba in the 1920s.
Duranord was so funny because he remembered everything and
even offered a reporter a piece of the birthday cake that was frozen and topped
with the number 108 that his son Vely Veillard, who is 62 years old, had told
him.
Jeanne Veillard was seated next to Duranord Veillard, dressed
in a white linen dress and a pair of pink slippers, and parted in the hand.
She was asked how she met her husband.
I found it on the street, he joked in Creole French, making
the room come alive that was full of family members, as everyone laughed at his
response.
Although Rockland County does not have an official record of
the oldest person, the Veillard family believes that Duranord and Jeanne are
the two most married marriages in the area. They have 12 grandchildren and 1
great grandchildren.
Veillard told the magazine news that the secret behind the
healthy and long life they experience is only God who said in French Creole.
Even though Veillard wakes up at 5 am and does 5 to 7 pushups and would take a
cup of tea, oatmeal and fresh fruit for breakfast. Then for lunch and dinner I
would eat fish and fresh vegetables and always sleep early and very often
The couple is always inside except to see the doctor or walk
without help. But both are looking forward to another milestone in their lives.
Thank you very much veillard said to all bien-merci beaucoup.
