Bayezid Hossain, a four-year-old boy from Bangladesh, is the
boy who looks like an elderly pensioner because of a very rare condition.
It is believed that the young man suffers from progeria,
which causes him difficulty in eating, gives him a swollen face, flaccid skin,
hollow eyes, joint pain as well as weak teeth due to his aging eight times
faster than normal.
Unfortunately, children of the same age as Bayezid are
afraid of the rare condition, which means that they can not go to school.
People in the community usually avoid it, even though after spreading the word
about their birth, people queued outside their house to see it.
Tripti Khatun, the four-year-old mother, said: "Bayezid
only learned to walk three years, but had a full set of teeth at three months
of age.
"His physical growth is completely abnormal but
mentally, he has wonderful conversation, very conscious and is very intuitive
for his age.
"It does not look like other kids, it looks like an old
man, as a mother for the first time I can not bear the pain of seeing my son
like that."
When Bayezid was born in 2012, the doctors were astonished
and unable to help Tripti and her husband, Lovelu Hossain.
"I was terrified to see him when he was born,"
Tripti said. "It was flesh and bones, it looked like an alien and it was
heartbreaking for me.
"The doctors did not know what to do, they said they
had never seen such a baby, they warned us that they could not do
anything."
Unfortunately, Tripti and Lovelu did not receive help from
their local community, who instead gossiped about their son, and discussed
their abilities as parents, since they are also cousins.
Typically, those suffering from progeria have a short life,
usually dying from heart attacks or strokes at an average age of 13.
Bayezid has been labeled the "old man" by the
locals, but is being slowly accepted.
According to his mother, he fully understands his condition,
but cries every time he talks.
His father, Lovelu, has accepted that there can be no cure
for Bayezid, but also believes that his son is not getting the best chance of
survival because his family is poor.
